Hi - we are considering a vacation during x-mas week (Dec 18th - 25th) this year. 2 adults and 3 young kids. We are not really interested in an all inclusive but want to be near the beach with pools and activities. Prefer to rent a villa or condo with kitchen and there seem to be a lot of choices and different beaches. Any suggestions on how to narrow our search?

Following your preferences it seems that what would be most convenient for you and your family is a place like a villa in the Residencial Costa Bavaro in which you get a discount for a day pass in the resort (for example, the IFA Villas Bavaro Resort & Spa). You will have the pool, kitchen, beach, other amenities in the villa; additionally there are activities for the family at the resort.

Other places are: Villas del Sol II also located inside the Costa Bavaro, the Ambar Villas (at the Cocotal Golf & Country Club complex) and it includes discount on pass for the Melia Caribe Tropical Resort. Along with the Aquamarina condos in Cap Cana, Santa Maria del Mar and Playa Turquesa, both located in El Cortecito beach and Los Corales in Bavaro beach.
