Sea Weeds

We went to Punta Cana before, in May a few years ago, and there were a lot of seaweeds on the beaches. We want to go again in November this year 2012. We wondered when is the worst season where the beaches are filled with seaweeds?

Answer:

Hello Emad,

The seaweeds tend to appear more in the rainy season, which is from May to approximately the middle of November. Some days won't rain much, others almost the whole day and in some days there can be various intervals in which it will rain quite a bit. The rain tends to sweep the seaweeds from other areas and they end up around the beach shore. It is also dependent on the overall change in the climate and the ocean currents nearby the Dominican Republic.

Algae tend to grow faster during summer while the winter months result in a slower seaweed production. In other words if you travel during the last part of November to April; you will definitely find the beaches with less seaweed than in the other months.

There are other factors that may affect the amount of seaweed you can find at the Punta Cana beaches.

Not all the beaches are the same. Some areas have more seaweed than others. One example of this is the Bavaro beach area. This specific beach has a tendency to accumulate a larger amount of seaweed than others; of course the staff of the resort always tries their best to remove all they can so the guests can relax and have a pleasant stay.

The Melia Caribe Tropical and the Paradisus Palma Real are great resort choices if you want to vacation around this area.

A little more to the north you can find El Cortecito beach which is a very popular spot although some seaweed is very possible. Good resorts in this area are the: Grand Palladium Bavaro and the Occidental Grand.

In the Arena Gorda beach area, which is located north of El Cortecito you will find an even smaller amount seaweed. Some of the resorts close by that might interest you are the: Majestic Colonial, the Ocean Blue and Sand and the Riu complex hotels.

Farther to the north you can find Macao beach. In this area you will see that seaweeds are not a problem. The water tends to be cleaner but the waves are also rougher. If you do not mind the extra surf you will find the place quite appealing. Some resorts in the northern part of Arena Gorda which is very close to the Macao beach are: the Barcelo Punta Cana and the Hard Rock and Casino.

If you are willing to go to Uvero Alto, which is north of Macao beach; the Dreams Punta Cana is a great alternative for a beach with very little seaweed.

Contact the resort before booking your stay and find out how often the beach is cleaned.
