How safe is the drinking water? Is it safe to drink on the excursions, outside of the resort?Answer:
Tap water is not safe to drink at any moment. Only drink bottled water in the region of Punta Cana or in any other part of the Dominican Republic that you will visit. It would be better if you can find it distilled but purified is fine too.
Dominicans and other people that have been living in the Dominican Republic for years may be accustomed to it but travelers often have stomach issues after drinking tap water when they travel to Punta Cana.
The reactions to the water seem to occur when people stay for a week or longer, which is the common time length of most trips to the Caribbean.
You should also used bottled water for brushing your teeth (and all of your family members should do it as well). To avoid any health problems on your vacation if you or anyone you are traveling with has a very sensitive stomach: -
avoid eating fresh salads – they could have been rinsed with tap water-
also avoid consuming peeled fruits, pick the ones with skin (like apples, pears, peaches, etc. that you can peel yourself - unless they have been cooked for a dessert or a meal, etc.)-
and don't drink fresh juices, as they could contain tap water-
be sure about the water of the ice cubes used in most of the drinks-
always ask to be completely sure, particularly in the case of juices and ice
If you are going on an excursion also bring bottled water in your bag, or ask your tour rep if you will be going to be near a market during the tour, like the almacenes Iberia in Higuey.
But it should be said that with so many fun things to do in Punta Cana and the appetizing meals it is very possible that you or another person that is traveling with you will likely forget about the water issue and will drink at least some of it. So for that reason, unless you can be constantly reminding everyone in your travel group, is better to be prepared. For your trip you should take with you some basic medications, including: medicine for stomach problems in case that family member or friend unknowingly drinks tap water and unfortunately has a reaction.
