Dominican Republic Climate

Weather in various regions of the country

The Dominican Republic climate is a tropical one during the whole year. It varies slightly depending of the region of the country.

The average temperature during the year is 25 °C (77°F). Despite the seasonal differences which are not that great, the Dominican Republic enjoys a hot tropical climate even during the “winter season” of the country.

In the Dominican Republic the central mountain area is the coldest zone in the country. The temperatures in that area fluctuates around 16°C (61°F). The hottest zone in the country is located in the southwest area which has a more desert like climate. The temperatures around there usually fluctuates around 40°C (104°F).

Leaf with drops of waterThe months between October and April are usually when the rain activity peaks up for the northern areas of the country like the cities of Puerto Plata, Cabarete and Samana

The greatest rainfall activity for the southern areas of the Dominican Republic occurs between May and November.

Local thunderstorms are possible at any time of the year but they don’t last long as they usually just last a couple of minutes.

Summer and winter seasons are not that different in the Dominican Republic. The general variation is just a couple of degrees, of course for the locals this small change can make a huge difference. The summer season range from May to October. The normal high temperatures for the coast during summer fluctuates around 31°C (87°F) during daytime. For the night the temperature can go as low as 22°C (72°F) at this time of the year. For the southern areas like La Romana and Boca Chica the summer is very humid as well because the summer and the rainy seasons go together.

The winter season for the Dominican Republic climate runs from November to April. During this time of the year the rainfall is very low so the humidity remains low as well and the temperatures are way fresher than in the summer months because of that. During winter the coast area experience temperatures about 28°C (83°F) in daytime and in the nighttime it usually drops around 20°C (68°F). In the Central mountain area the temperatures go way lower and sometimes even lower than 0°C (32°F) in the highest peaks.

The Dominican Republic climate like the rest of the Caribbean islands is exposed to the hurricanes during the hurricane season that goes from June to November. The most dangerous months for the island are usually August and September which is usually the time of the year where the tropical storms and hurricanes are most likely to make landfalls in the area.
